The Tale of a Pharmaceutical Junkie

Awoke in a haze of macabre melancholy
Hit the medicine cabinet, snatched prescription bottles
Roaches scurried out of site, a daily routine

The living room: cold, dark, uninviting
Pills splayed across a glass coffee table
Razor blade sharpened, spoon polished

Deftone's record spun backwards
Lexapro minced, lithium diluted, xanax danced
Sweating, tremulous, thoughts distorted, heart twisted

A golden straw gleamed, god-like
Relief aligned in formation
No retreat, respite abounded

Inhaled then exhaled, dust snorted brain-bound
Forehead numb, drainage slunk
Pixey dust back flipped into the gut

Lips chapped, anxiety stifled, yet crazed
A spittle of water, a cotton swab, a Bic lighter
Heart stopping tonic bubbled, sweat dribbled

Syringe filled, plunger cocked
Trigger pulled, middle fingers up to god and the devil
Euphoric apathy flooded primal senses

Alarm clock blared, focus regained, void of emotional pain
Skipped a shower, toothbrush untouched
Yesterday’s clothes, off to work, comfortably numbed
